FIS Cross-Country World Cup opening is here!

In spite of mild weather conditions all over Europe FIS Cross-Country World Cup kicks off in Sjujoen this weekend.

One week ago the chances that the World Cup opening would be taking place were low. Despite warm weather conditions the Norwegian Ski Association, organizing committee of Sjusjoen and Beitostoelen put tremendous effort to make the season opener happen in the original dates. "I have to thank the OC as they did a great job to arrange the event in just ten days in these conditions. We all have been suffering from having warm weather since a while but finally in Sjujsoen we found a place where we can held this weekend the World Cup opening," FIS Cross-Country Race Director stated.

Course is ready

Organizers produced approximately 20.000 m3 of snow and were able to prepare 3.75 km lap. "The track is very compact and athletes have a good grip, even it is not the toughest course, it has a good profile, demanding uphills and it fits very well for the first competition of the season and I’m sure, it will be a tight decision specially in men’s race," Jürg Capol revealed.

New starting order

First competition of the season is to be carried out in individual start. However, unlike previous seasons new starting method will be tested. "In order to have more time to show the best athletes during an interval start race, a new starting order will be tested tomorrowi. The 30 best athletes in the current World Cup standings who are registered to compete will start in reverse order as the last group. This follows the current practice; however, registered athletes with the highest FIS points will be set between the seeded group athletes. This means, for example, that given intervals of 30 seconds, there will be one minute between the second best athlete in the World Cup rankings and the best athlete in the FIS points standing. If the trial works well, FIS will continue to start interval competitions in this starting order during the World Cup season 2011/12," Jürg Capol explained.

The best athletes on the start line

First World Cup competition of the season will be featuring World's best Cross-Country skiing athletes. Petter Northug and Marit Bjoergen will be leading the Norwegian squad on the home soil. Marcus Hellner, Johan Olsson, Anders Soedergren are ready on the Sweden's side. Swedish veteran Mathias Fredriksson got a surpsingi ticket to Sjusjoen after fourth place last weekend in FIS race in Bruksvallarna. “I had to borrow some skis from Marcus Hellner for the UNICEF auction of my equipment I‘m running every weekend as I didn’t thought to make it to the World Cup this year.” stated Mathias Fredrikson. "I'm very pleased about the invitation I got. I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow and I hope I will deliver good performance," Fredriksson said.

Justyna Kowalczyk had an impressive start in the season having won three FIS races in three days last week in Muonio.

Only a few athletes are to skip the season opener. Czech ace Lukas Bauer got sick at the pre-season training camp in Finland and will sit out World Cup in Sjusjoen. Jens Filbrich has got sick recently and will not on the start line either.
