Hoefl-Riesch maintains DH dominance with fastest training in Bansko

BANSKO, Bulgaria – It truly felt like spring with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky in Bansko, Bulgaria for the ladies first World Cup downhill training on Thursday.

The Marc Girardelli course was slightly modified from the last time (also the first time) the ladies raced here in 2009 but rock solid from top to bottom.

“I think they redid the hill after the men’s races,” said American Laurenne Ross, who skied the course for the first time Thursday and was third-fastest in training. “They fenced off one part of the course. It’s all shiny and you’re like, ‘Oh God, I have to ski on that?!’ But they prepared the course really well. It’s a cool hill. There’s no flat anywhere. It’s just all go, go, go.”

Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who won last weekend’s downhill race on the 2014 Olympic slope in Sochi, put down the fastest time in training Thursday, finishing in 1 minute, 35.54 seconds. Lindsey Vonn (who was absolutely mobbed by photographers and journalists after arriving at the airport in Sofia on Wednesday) was second fastest, 0.52 behind and Ross was 0.96 behind.

“It wasn’t too bad I didn’t feel great – I had to fight with the line sometimes,” Hoefl-Riesch said. “It’s still nice. It’s really technical from the top to the bottom. You don’t have any gliding. You have to fight hard and lean [into] really good turns.”

The top of the Bansko course sits at 2,395 meters with the finish at 1,615 meters and a 780-meter vertical drop. The super G course starts at 2,205 meters with a 590-meter vertical drop.

When the ladies last raced here three years ago they did two downhill races and a super G and Switzerland’s Fabienne Sutor (now out for the season with a knee injury) had the best weekend of her career, winning the first downhill, taking third in the second DH and second in the super G. Austria’s Andrea Fischbacher also dominated, winning the second downhill race, finishing second to Sutor in the first and eighth in the SG, which Vonn won. The downhill course was about 10 seconds slower three years ago and most racer say they prefer the modified version for this weekend’s races, which will include a downhill Saturday, SG Sunday and a second DH training Friday.

“Last time we were starting much higher than now, also going around the forest, coming back into the steep again … it’s much nicer,” said Anja Paerson, who after Lara Gut (fourth and 1.32 off the lead time) was fifth fastest Thursday. “The snow is really nice and compact – really hard, good conditions. We need it for this heat. The weather may be our biggest challenge. The course is going to get bumpy after today.”

Athletes also said maximizing the forces around every turn is going to be a challenge in Bansko and also key in finishing on top.

“You have to use the fall line as much as you can,” Ross said. “Where people skid, you have to arc. You have to run a tight line and get as late as you can. There’s a fine line between being in control and being too high.”

The forecast in Bansko is calling for more sun for Friday’s training, temperatures reaching nearly 10 degrees, sun on Saturday and light snow Saturday night into Sunday.
