Austrian slalom skier Kilian Albrecht has received Bulgarian citizenship to compete for the Balkan country in this season's World Cup Championships. The Austrian skier is expected to land in Sofia on Sunday and sign the necessary documents on Monday, Bulgarian ski federation vice-chairman Georgi Bobev announced.
Kilian Albrecht, who last competed in the World Cup for Austria in March, plans to make his debut for his adopted country in Alta Badia, Italy, next week.
The 33-year-old finished fourth for Austria in the men's slalom at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. At his peak he was a regular top 10 finisher in the World Cup. He did not compete in this year's Turin Games.
"His presence will be a great addition to the Bulgarian team," Bobev boasted. In his opinion, Albrecht has great experience and will be "priceless" for our young skiers.
The world championships will be held in the Swedish ski resort of Are February 3-18.
Other high-profile Austrian-born skiers have turned their backs on their country in the past after falling out with the powerful Austrian federation or simply struggling to retain a place in the squad, Eurosport commented.
Elfi Eder, the 1996 slalom World Cup champion and 1994 Olympic slalom silver medallist, left in 1997 to race for the Caribbean island of Grenada.
Josef Strobl, a seven times winner on the World Cup tour, took Slovenian citizenship in 2004 but failed to make that country's team for the Turin Games.

"The procedure concerning the citizenship was completed," said Bulgarian ski federation vice-chairman Georgi Bobev. "He will arrive on Monday only to put a pencil on the documentation."
Albrecht, who last competed in the World Cup for Austria in March, plans to make his debut for his adopted country in Alta Badia, Italy, next week.

Neuer Anlauf mit neuem Pass
Der ÖSV hat bereits die Freigabe erteilt.
Slalomspezialist Kilian Albrecht erhält die bulgarische Staatsbürgerschaft. Das gab der Bulgarische Skiverband am Samstag in Sofia bekannt.
Der 33-jährige Vorarlberger soll am Montag in die bulgarische Hauptstadt reisen, um das entsprechende Dokument zu unterschreiben. Vom Österreichischen Skiverband (ÖSV) ist der Olympiavierte von 2002 im Slalom bereits freigestellt und könnte damit ab sofort Weltcup-Rennen sowie auch die WM im Februar 2007 in Aare für Bulgarien bestreiten.
"Nur noch eine Formalität"
Albrecht hätte bereits vergangene Woche einen Termin in Sofia gehabt, wegen Schlechtwetters waren aber alle Flüge aus Wien nach Bulgarien ersatzlos gestrichen worden.
"Es ist nur noch eine Formalität, die zu erledigen ist", versicherte der Vorarlberger. "Ich habe sehr viele Mühen auf mich genommen. Die Erleichterung ist groß, dass jetzt alles funktioniert hat. Es war mein großer Wunsch, endlich wieder Rennen fahren zu können."
Erster Auftritt nächste Woche?
Sein Comeback im Weltcup plant Albrecht bereits für das kommende Wochenende in Alta Badia. Sein letztes Weltcup-Rennen für den ÖSV hatte der Vorarlberger im vergangenen März in Shiga Kogen (Rang 19) bestritten, er fehlte danach beim Weltcup-Finale in Aare.
"Für uns ist die Sache längst erledigt", versicherte ÖSV-Alpinchef Hans Pum. "Wenn er einen gültigen Pass hat, kann er fahren, für wen er will. Er braucht dazu nicht einmal eine Freigabe von uns."
Die Startgenehmigung kann der Internationale Skiverband (FIS) allerdings erst beim Vorweis eines gültigen Reisepasses erteilen.
"Es war ein langer Weg"
Nachdem Albrecht seinen Platz im ÖSV-Kader in der vergangenen Saison nach mäßigen Leistungen verloren hatte, wollte der Vorarlberger erst wegen seiner Geschäftstätigkeit in Dubai für die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate (VAE) starten.
In weiterer Folge hatte der Techniker bei der FIS auch um eine Startgenehmigung für Ungarn angefragt, aber keinen Pass ausgestellt erhalten.
"Es war ein langer Weg, aber jetzt kann ich mich endlich wieder auf das Wesentliche konzentrieren. Jetzt kann ich hoffentlich endlich wieder Rennen fahren", erklärte Albrecht, der zuletzt einige Tage auf dem Kühtai trainiert hatte und auf Grund seiner vermutlich sehr hohen Startnummern auf gute Pistenbedingungen hofft. "Denn ich fühle mich eigentlich recht gut."
