. world ski news : Worley takes Are giant slalom - 12 December 2009 - 15:39

Tessa Worley of France won the giant slalom in Åre, 57/100 in front of Tina Maze (SLO) who was second with Kathrin Zettel (AUT) in third.

With a massive lead of 8/10 after the first run the French racer easily kept her lead and collected her second FIS World Cup victory in giant slalom. Worley collected her first World Cup victory in Aspen in November 2008. Sinnce then she has kept her results between 8th and 27th position

The young talent Federica Brignone of Italy finished fourth, a solid showing following on her third place in the giant slalom race in Aspen two weeks ago.

Kathrin Hoelzl who won the last giant slalom in Aspen was 17th after first run, 2.55 behind, and finished strong 5th in the end.

A new Swedish talent was presented in Sara Hector, 17 years old and the youngest racer in today's race. With bib number 59 in the first run she was the only racer with a bib-number above 40 to make it to the second run. After a 27th place in the first run, she managed to push forward to an 22nd place.

Maria Riesch lost her chance to lower the gap to Lindsey Vonn in the overall standings when she fell in the second run. The World Cup Overall leader Lindsey Vonn also did not finish - out in the first run - so the two remain atop of the World Cup standings with Kathrin Zettel climbing up to 3rd thanks to her 3rd place finish in Are.

Kathrin Zettel now leads the GS rankings ahead of Kathrin Hölzl and Tina Maze.
