Goetschl clinches super-G title, Styger posts first World Cup win

SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) _ Hermann Maier won the final super-G of the season Thursday and increased his lead atop the overall World Cup standings. The "Herminator" covered one of the toughest super-G layouts of the season in 1 minute, 18.73 seconds and won with a huge 0.63 second gap ahead of fellow Austrian Stephan Eberharter. Eberharter lost 20 points to Maier in the overall standings but retained second place. Another Austrian, Christoph Gruber, came in third, 0.75 seconds behind and Benjamin Raich rounded out an all-Austrian top-four finish, 0.86 seconds back, moving him ahead of Bode Miller into third place in the overall.

Goetschl clinches super-G title, Styger posts first World Cup win

11/03/2004 13:37 SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) _ Austria's Renate Goetschl clinched the World Cup super-G title Thursday for her second crystal globe in 24 hours, while Nadia Styger of Switzerland posted her first career World Cup victory. Goetschl finished only seventh on the day, but it was enough to remain ahead of her nearest challengers France's Carole Montillet and Hilde Gerg of Germany. Montillet finished 16th and out of the points, as only the top-15 score at the World Cup Finals. Gerg was fifth, but it was not sufficient to catch Goetschl in the rankings. Styger, the 20th skier out of the start hut, stormed the course in 1 minute, 25.53 seconds. Though there were seven of the world's best skiers to go, Styger's time held strong. The Swiss skier's previous best result in super-G was a fifth place finish in Lake Louise last December. Germany's Maria Riesch was runner-up in 1:25.85 for her third podium finish in the super-G this season. Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister was third in 1:25.89. The World Cup Finals include the last men's and women's races in each Alpine discipline, plus cross country, snowboarding and freestyle and serve as a major rehearsal for the Turin 2006 Olympics.
