. world ski news : Goergl leads first training in St. Moritz - 28 January 2010 - 21:55

Elisabeth Goergl of Austria posted the fastest time in downhill training Wednesday on the Corviglia course, where the 2003 FIS World Championships were also held. Goergl was 0.04 seconds ahead of Julia Mancuso (USA) whilst Sweden's Anja Pärson took third.

Lindsey Vonn, the overall World Cup leader who has won all five World Cup downhill races this season, trailed by 1.20 seconds on a clear, sunny morning.

For the hosting team, the day was full of ups and downs. Martina Schild, 2006 Olympic silver medalist in the downhill, was taken to a hospital after injuring her left knee landing a jump early in her run. At the same time, Dominique Gisin placed 35th in a surprise comeback two weeks after undergoing knee surgery. Gisin was expected to miss the Olympics after knee injury at the Haus im Ennstal World Cup earlier this month but now seems to be able to compete in Vancouver while teammate Schild will miss the Games. The Swiss will name their Olympic team after the three-race St. Moritz weekend, the final Audi FIS Ski World Cup stop before the Vancouver Games.

St Moritz will host a super combined comprising a super-G and a slalom, as well as a downhill and a super-G.
