OLYMPICS 2014. With the Vancouver 2010 Games now over, the winter sports world is turning its attention to Sochi 2014. After a fantastic Closing Ceremony at BC Place, where the Olympic flag was handed from Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson to Sochi Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov, the future hosts from Russia will now return with the flag to the Black Sea resort that will host the world in just four years' time.

Gateway To The Future

As with all future host cities, Sochi presented a short eight-minute show during the Closing Ceremony. Living up to Sochi's tagline of Gateway to the Future, the segment showcased Russia's rich cultural heritage, as well as the new modern face of the country. Including Russian stars such as Yevgeny Plushenko, Natalia Vodianova, and Valery Gergiev, the Sochi 2014 presentation wowed the crowd in the stadium and spectators watching around the world.

The Project

The Sochi 2014 Games project sees the Olympic winter sports venues split into two clusters: one coastal cluster in the Imeretinskaya Valley, which will play host to all of the ice events, the Olympic Stadium and a number of brand new hotels; and a mountain cluster in the region of Krasnaya Polyana, which will play host to the other Olympic sports at the Winter Games. The Games will offer Sochi and Russia the chance to create a world-class sporting and tourism destination that will leave a lasting legacy to the region and beyond.

Sochi 2014

Sochi was elected as the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games at the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City on 4 July 2007. Sochi won the vote against the cities of Salzburg (Austria) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea) in the second round of voting. The Russian city edged out PyeongChang 51 votes to 47, with Salzburg having been eliminated in round one. The Sochi Games will play host to the seven Olympic Winter sports currently on the Olympic programme and will run from 7 to 23 February 2014.
