TOURISM. Bulgaria's winter tourism  has over the last few years grown in popularity, and offers excellent facilities and good value for money compared to other European ski resorts.

Bansko Opening

The Bulgarian winter ski resort of Bansko will be officially opened by top French skier Luc Alpand on 11th December 2010.

Bansko the largest and most popular resort set amid the beautiful Pirin mountain range,offers 70 km of pistes with skiing to suit all abilities.It is situated 160 km from Sofia and about an hours drive from the Borovets resort. It will however be open from 1st December providing weather conditions are suitable.

Borovets opening

Borovets the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria will open on the 18th December 2010.

Situated east of the Rila Mountain range, surrounded by pine woods,with a healthy climate and 72 km for the capital city of Sofia.The resort offers a wide range of facilities to suit everyone, and excellent equipment with qualified instructors fluent in foreign langauages.
Both resorts also have an abundance of hotels and restaurants, and nightlife ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Bansko ski season opens December 11

The new skiing season in Bulgaria's top mountain resort of Bansko will be launched on December 11 2010 with a parallel slalom event featuring eight former ski legends, Bulgarian media reported.

The Legends Race, as the event is called, will host Marc Girardeli, Luke Alphand, Andreas Wenzel, Maria Valizer, Leopold Stock, Josef Strobl, Michael Von Groningen and Bulgaria's best ever alpine skier, 1977 European champion Petar Popangelov.

The event is scheduled for 12.30am at the Alberto Tomba slope.

To complement the race, the town hall has booked several performers from Bulgaria's Music Idol TV show, while in the central square in Bansko, local officials will be awarded with the prize "Bansko – winter capital of the Balkans", Dnevnik daily reported.

Bansko slopes official opening

Finally! the opening of the 2010/11 winter season has been announced. On 11th December Bansko will kick off in style the official opening of the slopes with the traditional legends slalom race at 12.30 on the Tomba run with participants including Marc Giradelli and Peter Popangelov, Luc Alphand, Andreas Wenzel, Maria Wallizer, Leonhard Stock, Joseph Straub plus Michael von Grünigen.
Additionally, in the Happy End bar there will be a charity auction in support of the children's winter sports programme.
Finally you will be able to see performances by London Beat, Bulgarian pop idol finalists and presentations both in the main square and on the specially designed snow stage, plus Bansko will be officially presented with the title of Winter capital of the Balkans.

Bansko ski zone cash desk to operate with extended working hours

“Ulen” Ltd. will prolong the working ours of the cash desk on the gondola lift in Bansko for the forthcoming winter season 2010/ 2011.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday the cash desk will operate until 11.00Pm, to avoid queues in the mornings

Bulgarian Winter Resort Borovets Expects 10% More Tourists

One of Bulgaria's top winter resorts – Borovets in the Rila Mountain – expects a 10% increase of the holidaymakers for the winter season.

According to Neli Sandalska, head of the Board of Borosport AD, the owner of Borovets, the resort is seeing a tangible increase in bookings, especially from Russia and the Balkan countries.

The bookings by British tourists are expected to go up 5%, as is the number of Bulgarians who will spend their winter vacations in Borovets.

The Borovets resort plans to open the 2010/2011 ski season on December 18, 2010.

Ski police will appear on the slopes of Pamporovo

One of the leading ski resorts in Bulgaria, Pamporovo, intends to improve the security situation on its tracks on the slopes of the Rhodopes. With this purpose in Pamporovo are being created special ski police units. It will be the first experience of creating ski police units at the Bulgarian ski resorts.

Police units along with representatives of the ski tour company "Pamporovo" will be protect the order on the slopes of the resort throughout the winter season, which runs in Pamporovo from December to March. It was announced by new director of tourism holding company Marian Belyakov in an interview for the local press.

The main purpose of creating of the ski police is quick solution of the problems with parking, as well as avoidance of misconduct on the slopes. Behavior of drunken skiers on the slopes is a long-standing headache for the administration of Pamporovo.

In addition to the ski police units at the resort will also be created and additional mobile police post, which will be located near the bus station.

To date, Pamporovo Ski Resort is one of the most developed in Bulgaria. Total length of tracks at the resort is more than 37 kilometers, 14 kilometers of which are equipped with snowmaking machines.

In the current ski season Pamporovo tourist authorities promise to provide new opportunities for skiers. Thus, in Pamporovo is planned to open a track with full night lighting. New lighting equipment will be installed on the track “Snezhanka 2”.

In addition to the modernization of tracks and safety improvements Pamporovo will be one of the first ski resorts in Bulgaria, which will be able to actively offer its services in summer. According to the website focus-fen.net, Pamporovo administration has concluded agreements with a number of Greek resorts on offering joint proposals for holidays at the sea and in the mountains.
