. bg ski news : Bansko Is No.1 Winter Sports Center on the Balkans - 12 December 2010 - 09:16

The winter fiesta in Bansko has just started. Two weeks before the Christmas holiday, Bulgaria’s winter resort of Bansko gathered a real constellation at the opening of this year’s ski season. They made a show race down the Tomba ski run.  The concessionaires of the ski runs used snow canons for the show.

Mark Girardelli and about a dozen other top skiers gave a start to this year’s winter fiesta in Bulgaria’s resort of Bansko, yesterday.
The kickoff was given by Bulgaria’s football legend Hristo Stoichkov, who arrived in Bansko towards 11 am, accompanied by his wife, Mariana. He was soon followed by Economy and Energy Minister Traycho Traykov, and ski legends Pavel Popangelov, Mark Girardelli and Maria Walliser who made a show race on the Tomba ski run.
The olympic champions Hanni Wenzel and Andreas Wenzel, the world downhill champion Harti Weirather, the Italian ski legend Gustavo Thoeni and the multiple winner of the World Cup, Marc Girardelli will be the participants in the ski demonstrations. "Bansko proves once again it is one of the best ski resorts in the world by organizing such a wonderful ski show with so little snow,” the skiers said.
After the ski races, the stars received presents from Bulgaria’s Economy Minister Traycho Traykov and Bansko Mayor Alexander Kravarov.

Mark Girardelli: Do Not Abandon Bansko

I am Austrian, live in Switzerland and very often visit Germany. I can honestly say that Bansko has gained good name in these countries. A reputation can be improved only if progress does not stop, investment and building should not halt. This is the only way people from all over the world will come to Bulgaria and get to know it. I hope this could be achieved. In February next year Bansko will host the Men’s Skiing World Cup tournaments. Usually it takes about twenty years to receive the right to host a competition of this rank, if this is allowed. Bansko is one of the best ski regions in Eastern Europe. But if a resort, just like a man, is not developed, it is bound to regress. This will be Bansko’s fate if the resort is not developed. And the most important thing is that the resort has all perfect chances to develop.

Prince Albert II to Taste Kapama in Bansko
Stoichkov opened ski season in the winter resort

A true royalty will take part in a downhill race on the Shiligarnika ski run and try traditional Kapama (delicious meat and cabbage stew) in one of the taverns in Bulgaria’s winter resort of Bansko. Prince Albert II of Monaco would prefer Bansko to the prestigious Swiss resort of St. Moritz. His Serene Highness will visit Bansko for a charity ski show organized by his foundation. The event will take place March 26-27, 2011. Bulgaria’s football legend Hristo Stoichkov, F1 pilots, famous tennis players, singers and actors will be among the VIP guests at the ski show.
“I promise to ski more this year. I will bring my whole family to try the excellent ski runs above Bansko,” Stoichkov, who is an honorary citizen of Bansko, said.
Stoichkov and his wife, Mariana, were the VIP guests at the opening of this year’s ski season in Bansko.
