. world ski news : Miller wins slalom, joins Girardelli on all-around list - 15 December 2004 - 11:56

SESTRIERE, 13/12/2004 19:48, Italy (AP) _ World Cup leader Bode Miller won a night slalom Monday and joined Marc Girardelli as the only man to win races in all four disciplines in one season. The American covered the course for the Turin 2006 Olympics in a combined time for two runs of 1 minute, 39.03 seconds for his sixth win in 10 races this season. Switzerland's Silvan Zurbriggen came in second, a distant 1.27 seconds behind, for the first podium finish of his career. Kalle Palander of Finland was third, 1.41 seconds back. Girardelli became the first man to win slalom, giant slalom, super-G and downhill races in the same season in 1988-1989. However, Miller compiled his various victories in a span of only 16 days. Girardelli took more than two months to accomplish the feat. Girardelli still has the edge on Miller. He also won a combined race that season, an event based on the results of a slalom and downhill. Miller will have a chance to match that in the first combined this season in Wengen on Jan 14. Austria's Benjamin Raich, who won the first slalom this season, came in fourth, and Japan's Akira Sasaki was fifth. Local favorite Giorgio Rocca of Italy, second after the first run, finished 24th after missing a gate in his second trip down under the lights.
