Lindsey Vonn and Didier Cuche collect SG globes of the 2010-2011 season

ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP. LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland – It’s a rainy day in the Swiss Alps and due to overnight precipitation (continuous rain in lower elevations and a layer of very wet snow up higher), both the men’s and women’s World Cup Final super G races are canceled Thursday in Lenzerheide.

FIS officials said there is no way the race could be fair for all racers in such wet conditions.

Because there are race events planned every day through Sunday at World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide, the super G races will not be rescheduled and the globes will be given to athletes currently leading the standings. On the women’s side, Lindsey Vonn already secured the SG globe with an untouchable 560 points. With 389 points, Maria Riesch gets second place and with 315 and Julia Mancuso takes third in the discipline title.

The globe was up for grabs among a small group on the men’s side, but with the final race canceled, SG leader Didier Cuche will collect his second globe of the 2010-2011 season with 291 points. Austrian Georg Streitberger, who is out for the season with injury, takes second in the standings with 227 points. Ivica Kostelic, who secured the World Cup overall globe this season before Finals week with a whopping 1356 point total, will take third place in the super G standings with 223 points.

The rain is expected to continue in Lenzerheide through Friday morning. It will remain to be seen how conditions hold up for the men’s giant slalom and women’s slalom races scheduled for Friday. Please check back for updates.
