. world ski news : Men`s final GS in Lenzerheide canceled, ladies SL delayed - 18 March 2011 - 10:27

ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP. LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland – After the cancellation of both super Gs, the men’s giant slalom scheduled to be held on Friday falls victim to the weather and gets canceled. The start of the ladies' slalom first run is pushed back two hours.

Although the weather situation is looking more promising than on Thursday with some spots of blue sky even peaking through the layer of clouds, the amount of overnight precipitation (very wet snow all the way down to the bottom of the course) makes it impossible to prepare the course timely and in a quality that would provide for fair race conditions for all racers of the men’s World Cup Final giant slalom on Friday in Lenzerheide.

Because there are race events planned every day through Sunday at World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide, the men’s giant slalom will not be rescheduled and the globe will be given to the athlete currently leading the standings, which is the American Ted Ligety.

The three-time winner and world champion takes the discipline title (383) with a 77 point-advantage over Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal (306). Cyprien Richard of France (303) takes third, 80 points behind Ligety. It is the second consecutive giant slalom globe for the American.

The cancellation of the men’s final GS race gives the organizer more time for course preparation. The start of the ladies’ slalom first run is rescheduled for 11:00 CET while the second run starting time is 12:30 CET.
