. bg ski news : Pirin Run 2011 - Shaban Mustafa and Theodora Malcheva won the first mountain running to Vihren - 05 June 2011 - 17:21

MOUNTAIN RUNNING. The best Bulgarian mountain runner Shaban Mustafa and the national cross-country skiing competitor Theodora Malcheva won the first edition of the Pirin Run 2011. They finished first in men and women, climbing to a 13-kilometer distance from the town of Bansko to Vihren peak (2914 m).

Shaban Mustafa (Sports Club Leader - Nova Zagora) has gone the distance with a vertical drop of 1919 m to the highest peak of the Pirin mountain for 1:39,59 h. Second finished national biathlonist Mihail Klecherov (SC Bansko) with a time of 1:45,19 h. and the third was Ivan Zlatev (1:53,30 h.) also from SC Bansko.

Fastest from 5 women participating in distance to the Vihren was cross-country skier Teodora Malcheva from SC Alexander Logistics, as she reached the top for 2:27,44 h. Second in the ladies became Ivona Mihailova from Sofia (3:01,50 h) and the triad was complemented by the member of cross-country skiing - girls "B" national team - Martha Antonova (SC Boyana) with time 3:04,15 h. Martha was the only girl in the category, so she received a gold medal also.

In the final position for veterans in males first is Vladimir Panovski from SC Athletic 91 - Veliko Tarnovo (2:02,08 h), closely followed by Fiodor Dragolov At.Septemvri of SC 93 - Sofia (2:03, 21 h) and Plamen Davidov of SC Champion - Sofia (2:04,34 h), while on women veterans site only Anna K. Dragolova from SC-At.Septemvri 93 - Sofia climbed Vihren (4:06,35 h).

In the category of mountain cyclists Blagovest Dunin (Bansko) climb up first from Bansko to Bunderishka meadow (7 km) with a time of 41.26 minutes, second was Martin Linkov from veloclub Mammoth (44.14 min), while third remained Petar Petrov from Bansko ( 45.02 min). The only woman participating in a mountain bike category - Katerzhina Vesela from Poland, crosses the finish line with a time of 1:12,32 h. In the bike ranking for veterans first is John Veseli from Poland (49.38 min) and the second - Lachezar Stamenov from SC MTB Bansko (57.48 min ).

Borislav Yanushev (Cherniche) first crossed the finish line in the short distance for runners (from Bansko to Bunderishka meadow) with a time of 49.54 min, the second was Englishman Philip Brooks (52.34 min), followed by American John Hazelwood from team Centransit (1:00, 43 h). In ranking for veterans first was Brooks, followed by Hazelwood and Nikolai Manev from Lukovo (1:01:28 min). At this distance there were only two ladies, as the first - Zornitsa Valkova from Sofia (56.47 min), was third in the overall standings for men and women at 7 km. The other lady - Sylvia Ilieva from Kozloduy, was disqualified.

Unique mountain running race was from BFLA calendar and was also the first round of the newly created chain Salomon Challenge Bulgaria to rapidly climb the highest peaks in Bulgaria. Organizers are "Marathon" association (marathon.dir.bg) and Bansko municipality, and major sponsors are representative for Bulgaria of the brand Salomon "ITC Sports", the Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko and the German mark for non-carbonated water enriched with oxygen „Active O2”.

Participation in the race took a total of 45 athletes-runners and 9 cyclists from Greece, Britain, Holland, USA, Poland and Bulgaria. The competition was part of the celebrations of World Environment Day, which Bansko Municipality traditionally observes. The start shot was made personally by the mayor of Bansko Mr. Alexander Kravarov.

Winners climbed Vihren shared the money prize of 1240 leva (634 Euro), provided by Salomon Bulgaria, as well as numerous material prizes. Medals and awards were for the first six men and women 13km, for the first three veterans in men and women, for the first three in 7 km distance - men, women and veterans, and for cyclists - men, women and veterans. The next (second) stage of the initiative Salomon Challenge Bulgaria will be the climb from Sofia downtown to Vitosha hihgest point - Cherni vrah (the Black Peak) on August 28, 2011.
