Rienda Contreras wins giant slalom for first World Cup

ARE, ( 20/02/2005 14:47 )Sweden (AP) _ Maria Jose Rienda Contreras of Spain secured her first career World Cup victory on Sunday, easily winning a giant slalom on the same hill where she was runnerup a year ago. Rienda Contreras, who has skied 11 seasons on the World Cup circuit, had a combined two-run total of 2 minutes, 04.68 seconds down the Olympia course. Nicole Hosp, the first-run leader from Austria, was second in 2:05.26 and Anja Paerson of Sweden took third, 0.89 off the winner's pace. Paerson's podium finish, coupled with an 11th-place finish by Janica Kostelic, enabled Paerson to overtake the Croat in the overall standings. Paerson, the defending overall champion who won the GS in this northern Swedish ski resort the last two years, moved to 961 points atop the standings. Kostelic has 953. Finland's Tanja Poutiainen skied out early in the first run and dropped to third overall with 909 points. Julia Mancuso of the United States finished fourth, 0.93 behind.

Dorfmeister, Meissnitzer give Austria 1-2 sweep in super-G

ARE, ( 19/02/2005 13:53 )  Sweden (AP) _ Michaela Dorfmeister and Alexandra Meissnitzer gave Austria a 1-2 sweep in a women's super-G on Saturday, while world champion and defending World Cup overall titlist Anja Paerson only managed fifth before her home fans. Dorfmeister skied a near-perfect race down the 1,801-meter Olympia course, crossing in 1 minute, 07.53 seconds. It was her second super-G win of the season. Meissnitzer was 0.45 behind while Lucia Recchia of Italy took third, 0.52 behind. The Austrians' double in northern Sweden came just an hour after Michael Walchhofer led an Austrian sweep of the podium in a men's World Cup downhill at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Janica Kostelic of Croatia, a three-time world champion in Bormio, Italy, was 0.54 off Dorfmeister's pace for fourth. Paerson, a surprise winner of the super-G world title, was just one hundredth of a second behind Kostelic.
