. world ski news : Munich City Event cancelled - 24 December 2011 - 15:31

ALPINE SKI. The City Event scheduled for 1st January 2012 in Munich (GER) had to be cancelled due to a lack of snow, too warm temperatures, rain and no positive weather forecast. It will not be replaced during this season.

"Despite the challenges caused by the constant weather changes, the Organizers tried truly everything to prepare and stage this big event. Significant ticket sales and a huge number of requests from media partners and stakeholders showed a big interest in the Munich City Event," commented FIS Chief Race Director for the men's Alpine, Günter Hujara.

"However, the temperatures through the last days and the warm rain melted the snow which was already produced. Almost 75% of the necessary snow were already on the ground. A Plan B foresaw the transport of snow from the Munich Airport, collected from the runways, onto the race hill. But even these efforts did not guarantee a sufficient result. This snow was mixed with too much sand and other materials so that it could not be used, also due to environmental concerns," said Hujara further.

"Unfortunately, the different weather forecasts do not predict enough cold temperatures over the next few days to guarantee sufficient snow production. At least 60 hours of temperatures below minus 5 degrees and dry conditions are needed but not in the forecast. All alternatives were checked but the probability of success of all these efforts was too low," concluded Hujara.
