One Hundred and Fifty New Hotels in Bansko

Ski legends Marc Girardelli and Rosi Mittermeier will open the skiing season in the mountain resort of Bansko, Bulgaria's news agency reported.

The official opening will take place December 17.

In the summer Girardelli and the municipality of Bansko established a joint venture for the creation of a major sports club in the town. He is currently a consultant to Bulgaria's national skiing teams.

In the beginning of the month, the Observer reported that during the Olympia Ski Show in London in October, Girardelli was promoting Bansko.

One Hundred and Fifty New Hotels in Bansko

According to an English magazine, Bulgaria's mountain resort of Bansko is one of the fastest growing in Europe. There, you can see and feel the real building boom. Heavy machines are working around the clock on one hundred and fifty building sites and the investments total a whopping 150 million euro.

This winter, the capacity of Bansko is by 2,000 beds bigger than it was last year. The resort can accommodate about 8,000 tourists.

The capacity of the resort will expand to 10,000 beds in 2006.

"At present, some businessmen from Plovdiv city are building a five-star hotel in Bansko, which will open doors in the 2006-2007 season. Real estates in the resort sell at Euro 900 to 1,200 per square meter and the plots, which are not included in the town-planning cadastre, sell at 150-160 euro per square meter," said Mayor of Bansko town Alexander Kravarov.

Mayor Kravarov also wants to apply for a state subsidy of ten million levs, which will be used for solving the infrastructure problems of the town.

"If we receive this money, the Municipality will provide another ten million levs and the town will turn into a world ski center," Kravarov said.

The modern ski zone, the investments in which have reached about 40 million euro, stands out in sharp contrast to the infrastructural development of the town.

According to Kravarov, the state should take into consideration the development of Bulgaria's big resorts, which attract thousands of foreign tourists every year and provide some of the biggest revenues to the state budget.
